Engaging Students with STEM
Presenters: Anne McDonough, Leah Karabin, Sam Stirling and You!
Time: 8:00AM - 11:00AM
Target Audience: Secondary Science, Math and Technology Teachers

STEM classrooms are driven by engaging students in problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning and actively finding solutions to a problem. A STEM approach teaches independent innovation and allows students to explore curriculum to greater depths by utilizing and integrating cross-disciplinary skills. How can we progress towards STEM centered classrooms? We will explore what STEM classes look like, evaluate where our classrooms currently stand, and work in teams to redesign current lessons using STEM criteria.

Goals:
  • Form a working definition of STEM
  • Identify what we currently do and steps that can be implemented to move forward to providing a STEM based education
  • Share our vision of STEM within the WSD
  • In interdisciplinary groups, cooperatively (re)design a lesson with STEM characteristics.
Ground Rules:
  • Be Positive
  • For the next 3 hours open your minds to possibilities, not limitations.
  • Enjoy working with the best of Wissahickon, your talented colleagues!
